The Port of Moerdijk originated in the 1960s when storage basins were constructed in the nearby nature reserve Biesbosch. The sand excavated from there was used to create a new port and industrial area, intended to provide employment opportunities for young, well-educated individuals from the region. Shell, requiring capacity expansion, was the first to establish itself in this port and industrial area, which would later develop into a hub for sustainable logistics and internationally renowned process industries.
